Book Review: Unwept

Image
You know those special books that grab you right away and don't let go? This is one of those. However, if you're expecting something from the Dragonlance Queen similar to her other titles, this is not the place to look. I never would have guessed Tracy Hickman co-authored this if I didn't know. This is sort of a historical paranormal mystery with hints of steampunk. Now that's a mouthful. But really, it's all in there and it is mixed rather brilliantly. The beginning of this book shocked me profoundly in a way none other aside from Across The Universe has. This novel is a deep mystery that will keep you guessing. I'd like to say until the very end, but no, it will just keep you guessing. But you'll love every moment of it. My only complaints were the abrupt ending and the title that seemed to have nothing to do with the book (a pet peeve of mine). I will definitely purchase and read the sequel. Find it on: B&N / Amazon The ARC of this bo

The Wonderfulness that was RT

Image
Myself, Tee Tate, Tina Moss, and Yelena Casale I struggled so much over this post because I wasn't sure how to write it. Attending RT was very emotional for me, in a wonderful way. Like many of you writers out there, I've struggled to break in with each book that I have written, and eventually went indie after having an agent and failing to sell to editors due to many of them already having filled their 'paranormal list' for the time. If you follow myself or Tee Tate on Facebook or Twitter then you may have heard the news that the RT Book Lover's Convention was amazing for me in many ways. First, I had the opportunity to meet many of my online friends in person for the first time. They were just as fantastic in person as they are on line, a rare and wonderful thing. And...*dramatic pause*... I had the phenomenal good luck to win second place in the RT  Convention's American Idol Author C ompetition . While the RT website says only the first place winner

Thanks for coming Kristie! Tell us something quirky about your writing process? Lately, it’s been peanut butter M&Ms. When I start a new scene or session, I take a handful out of a very large bag and put them on my desk next to my keyboard. Then I sort them by color and arrange them in a pretty design. Starting with the color with the least amount, I eat them one-by-one as I start getting into the scene. Usually by the t

RT Convention Here I Come!

Image
This year (this week in face!) I get the distinct pleasure of attending my first Romantic Times Book Lover's Convention and it's in New Orleans! I've never been to the Big Easy so I'm crazy excited. Couple that with the fact that I get to meet some of my very best online buddies in person for the first time and I'm now ecstatic and can barely focus on anything else. This convention is packed with great workshops, networking and pitching opportunities, parties, and is absolutely star-studded with the likes of Charlaine Harris, Heather Graham, Kelly Armstrong, and more. While those folks are great, the ones I'm truly excited about meeting in person are my dear friends Tee Tate (author Eden Butler ), Tina Moss , Yelena Casale , Brenda Drake , Tracy Clark , S.R. Johannes , Trisha Leigh , Noelle Pierce , T.F. Leger , Stina Lindenblatt , Lydia Kang , and more! Can you believe that list? Wow. But there is another reason I'm going. My adult steampunk novel is

Movie Review: 47 Ronin

Image
For those who don't know, I love martial arts. It has been an integral part of my life since I was fifteen. I absolutely love a well choreographed fight scene. While I'm not big on the traditional old foreign martial arts film style of using wires to an extreme, I do love an excellent martial arts movie. 47 Ronin surprised me in a very big, and wonderful, way. I'm not sure why, but I didn't expect much out of it. Unfortunately that means I didn't go see it in the theater and I regret that deeply. This would have been phenomenal on the big screen. The story was excellent, a good, Americanized retelling of the tale of the 47 Ronin. The acting was compelling and I loved Keannu in this role. His fight scenes in particular were quite spectacular. I was reminded of Brad Pitt's scenes in Troy, only better. Yes, you read that right. Keannu's fight scenes were even better. I can hardly believe I wrote that, being such a big fan of Brad in Troy. But there you have

Flight For Safety is Finally Out!

Image
If you are a fan of thrillers and haven't read one of the newest voices in the genre, then you are in for a treat. Karlene Petitt is an exciting author who isn't afraid to write about touchy subjects that involve the airline industry. Her latest novel, a tie-in to her debut (Flight For Control) involves Darby Bradshaw, a supporting character from the first novel that more than stands on her own. Here is a bit about Flight For Safety: ...an aviation thriller where fiction mirrors truth and each flight is a game of Russian roulette. Aircraft are crashing after computer failures, incidents are occurring worldwide, coming close to hull losses, with mismanagement of aircraft navigation systems, and airline training programs are being cancelled. Aerodynamic skills are failing and the new generation pilots never learned them. But when Darby Bradshaw learns what is happening at her airline, she steps into a far-reaching conspiracy where she has become the target. My official revie

Happy May Day!

Image
This day has been celebrated as many things over the centuries: the Festival of Flora in honor of the  Roman goddess of flowers, Beltane the festival of fertility (now you know what dancing around the May pole signifies ;), and the German festival of Walpurgis Night (night of the witches' meeting). But far more recently it has been celebrated as the coming of spring and in many cultures flowers are left at the doorstep of women. So I offer to you these flowers, a photo I took while in Chelan Washington last year. Happy spring!
